The Fix Is In (in a Good Way): Fixing Factories
Do you have a household appliance that isn’t working properly – if at all?
Are you reluctant to throw it away and buy a new one?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could get that balky item repaired quickly, easily, and – perhaps best of all -- only for the price of parts?
In the United Kingdom, new neighborhood-based initiatives are addressing these very issues. They’re called fixing factories.
From phones to fans, toasters to teakettles, and lamps to laptops, appliances can be put back into working order at little cost.
Working out of previously vacant storefronts, the centers “….act as...community repair hub(s), allowing local residents to get appliances fixed, learn valuable repair skills from….volunteer fixers, and take part in weekly repair workshops.”
Fixing factories empower people. They save money. They can boost neighborhood business centers. They also help to divert material (particularly e-waste) from landfills.
