Making Drinking Water Out of......Thin Air?
"Research Scientists Have Found a Way of Obtaining Drinking Water from Air Humidity."
I recall mornings along the Pacific coast when mounds of ocean fog would take into its embrace places like Mendocino, Big Sur, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
A pity, isn’t it, that parched California cannot return those embraces.
Perhaps there now is a way.
Infinitesimal in its overall potential impact? Probably. Yet – a way.
“Not a plant to be seen, the desert ground is too dry. But the air contains water, and research scientists have found a way of obtaining drinking water from air humidity. The system is based completely on renewable energy and is therefore autonomous.” (1)
“MIT and UC-Berkeley Scientists recently demonstrated a new device designed to collect water straight from ambient air using only solar power. This water harvester can even pull moisture in desert climates where humidity is as low as 20 percent.” (2)
I’m told that the Pacific fogs are not as frequent as they once were. Yet consider this: the average monthly humidity in the aforementioned Los Angeles is about sixty-five percent. (3)
Perhaps – a way.
The fog comes
On little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
