Is the United States a Backsliding Democracy?
It is indeed, according to a new report from the Stockholm-based Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance
Is the United States a Backsliding Democracy?
“The number of backsliding democracies has doubled in the past decade, now accounting for a quarter of the world’s population. This includes established democracies such as the United States, but also EU Member States such as Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. More than two-thirds of the world’s population now live in backsliding democracies or autocratic regimes.” (1) (Emphasis added.)
The group attributes the erosion of democratic values in the U.S. to (a) the debasing of faith in electoral processes due to incessant false claims that the 2020 election was “stolen”, and (b) the voter suppression laws that have come to the fore in several of the states.
