Here's an Oxymoron: An Electrically Powered....Oil Tanker?

Unclear on the Concept

“The world's first electric-powered tanker ship, which has no carbon footprint, will go into service in Tokyo Bay later this month. …. The ship will be used to supply fuel oil to other vessels in Tokyo Bay.” (1)

Props for the propulsion. Opprobrium for the oil.

Ah, but perhaps there’s hope: a Japanese shipping firm “... is involved in a project aimed at creating a zero-emission ship that runs on ammonia.” (1)

That’s better – so long as the ammonia is NOT derived from hydrocarbons!

“A typical modern ammonia-producing plant first converts natural gas, liquified petroleum gas, or petroleum naphtha into gaseous hydrogen.” (2)

Talk about the prospect of defeating the very purpose!
