Does Your Food Contain GMOs? Labels to Begin on January 1st
To eat GMOs, or not to eat GMOs? That is the question.
Soon you’ll know whether or not bio-engineered ingredients are in most of the foods you purchase.
It’s the culmination of tumultuous legislative and regulatory processes. Litigation lingers.
In 2016, Congress passed (and President Obama signed) the National Bio-Engineered Food Disclosure Standard (1).
Charged with implementation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued rules in 2018. (2) It now has released an information sheet for consumers. (3)
Note that the commonly known acronym for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will not be used: rather, labels will reference the term “bio-engineered.”
